HBO wants to make the most of the Game of Thrones TV Series franchise (despite or perhaps precisely because of the disappointment of fans after the series finale, it comes to think). Deadline reports that the cable network is developing three more spin-off series set in the universe created by writer George R.R. Martin. The news is in line with what HBO's chief of content Casey Bloys said last month who hinted that the network would make efforts to find new stories "worth telling". But what stories are we talking about?
Is the Game of Thrones universe expanding?
The first idea - which according to Deadline would already be in an advanced stage of development - would be titled 9 Voyages and would be a series centered on Lord Carlis Valerian is also known as the Sea Serpent, the legendary navigator from Westeros. Curiously, this character will also appear in the spin-off House of the Dragon (the only spin-off of The Throne of Swords already confirmed and coming in 2022) with the face of Steve Toussaint.
Onboard this project would be a creative team that includes Bruno Heller (the creator of major series such as HBO's Rome and The Mentalist). The second project would be a series set in Flea Bottom, the poorest neighborhood of King's Landing were in Game of Thrones Arya Stark takes refuge after escaping from the Red Fortress; in this series could appear the characters of Ser Davos (Liam Cunningham) and Gendry, the bastard son of King Robert played by Joe Dempsie. A third project, tentatively titled 10,000 Ships, would focus on the journey made with 10,000 ships by Princess Nymeria, an ancestor of the Martell house who conquered and ruled Dorne a thousand years before the events narrated in Game of Thrones.
The other projects already in development
These three potential spin-offs are in addition to those we already had news of namely Tales of Dunk and Egg, a spin-off centered on the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and a young Aegon V of House Targaryen, respectively Dunk and Egg, which occurred about ninety years before the Chronicles of Ice and Fire, and an animated series for HBO Max. The only certain series, at the moment, however, remains House of the Dragon, set 300 years before the events of The Throne of Spade focuses on the devastating fall of the Targaryen house. There are several spin-offs instead trashed: among these The Long Night (unofficial title), a spin-off set much further back in time and focused on the descent of the world from the Golden Age of Heroes to the period known as the Long Night.
