Indian Railways is trying to provide digital facilities to the passengers and a lot of changes have been made in it in the last few years. At present, free Wi-Fi facility is provided to passengers at many railway stations, but earlier it was being told that now free Wi-Fi facility is going to be available in the train soon. However, now the government has no idea to do so. Yes, now Indian Railways has changed its mind.
On Wednesday, the government has informed the Parliament that the Indian Railways has 'dropped' the project of providing internet connection in the train. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha that Wi-Fi based internet facility was provided through satellite communication technology in Howrah Rajdhani Express train as a pilot project. Also, it was told in the reply that the cost of this project was very high.
According to the media report, according to the information given by the minister, 'This technology was costing a lot with recurring costs in the form of bandwidth charges and due to this, the entire cost was not effective. Along with this, the availability of internet bandwidth for the passengers was insufficient. In such a situation, the government withdrew the project of providing Wi-Fi in the train and the project has been dropped. Also, it has been told by the government that at present, suitable cost-effective technology is not available for the provision of Wi-Fi based internet services in trains.
Let us inform that earlier the then Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had said in 2019 that the Center is planning to install Wi-Fi in the train and it may be possible in the next few years.
What is the arrangement now?
At present, free Wi-Fi facility is available only at some railway stations. Also, you cannot run WiFi in it for a long time. If you reach the railway station and you want free Wi-Fi service there, then you have to request it. After this, you will get free Wi-Fi service for 30 minutes. If you want Wi-Fi for more than this, then you will have to pay a charge for it. The free Wi-Fi you will get for 30 minutes, its speed will also be just one Mbps. According to reports, a Wi-Fi facility is being provided at about 6000 stations at present.
