In the 15th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), 10 teams will be seen playing instead of 8. For this, two new teams will be announced on October 25. With two new teams joining the IPL, the number of league matches will obviously increase and the tournament may also drag on for a bit longer. According to media reports, the names of Ahmedabad and Lucknow are being told at the fore in the race for two new teams of IPL.

This will not be the first time that 10 teams will play in a season of IPL. Earlier in 2011 also 10 teams participated. Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala made their IPL debuts that season. After this, the Kochi Tuskers were dropped before the 2012 season, due to which 9 teams participated in the 2012 and 2013 seasons of IPL. Then from the 2014 season, IPL is being played in the format of 8 teams.
Then Chennai won the title
In 2011, the fourth season of IPL, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the title for the second time by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 58 runs. In the final match played in Chepauk, CSK, led by MS Dhoni, scored 205/5 in 20 overs. In reply, RCB led by Daniel Vettori could only manage 147 for 8 in 20 overs.
RCB opener Chris Gayle performed brilliantly and won the Orange Cap of that season. A total of 608 runs were scored from Gayle's bat in 12 innings that season. At the same time, Lasith Malinga of Mumbai Indians (MI) captured the Purple Cap. This Sri Lankan fast bowler took 28 wickets in 16 matches.
The format can be like this
Due to the participation of 10 teams, the 2011 format may return in the upcoming IPL season. A total of 74 matches were organized in that season, even then all the teams played 14–14 league matches. And now the same number of matches are likely to be played in the 2022 season as well.
Now there is to be Mega Auction, the players' auction for IPL 2021 can be held in January. There is no official announcement regarding the rules of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. But it is expected that due to the induction of two new franchises, there may be some changes in the existing retention rules. It is possible that the BCCI will allow teams to retain four players before the mega auction and the option of right to match card may be exhausted.
According to the existing rules, if the franchise retains three players, then 15 crores, 11 crores, and 7 crores are deducted from its budget amount. If the team retains two players, then Rs 12.5 crore and Rs 8.5 crore are deducted. At the same time, there is a provision of deducting Rs 12.5 crore from the budget amount for retaining the same player.
Some players may prefer to go to the auction instead of not being retained. The reason behind this will be that with the increase in the budget amount, two new teams are also joining. In such a situation, there may be competition among the franchise teams to buy players like David Warner. Some prominent Indian cricketers can also be seen putting their names forward for the auction.
